What Is a Trash the Dress?
Trash the Dress is a photography trend where the bride (or the couple) puts the wedding dress back on days or weeks after the wedding for an artistic photo session, free from the constraints of the big day’s protocol. The name comes from the idea of “ruining” the dress by getting it into water, sand, or jungle — but in practice, the result is anything but a disaster: these are some of the most elegant and emotional photographs there are.
In Playa del Carmen we have something very few destinations in the world can offer: crystal-clear cenotes just minutes from the city. That turns any Trash the Dress into a visual production completely different from an ordinary garden or beach shoot.
Why Do It Underwater
Most photographers offer Trash the Dress on the sand. We go a step further: freediving photography and video, which lets us capture the dress floating underwater, sunlight cutting through the surface, and that almost fairy-tale effect that only comes with real diving equipment and experience.
Cenotes of the Riviera Maya — freshwater, crystal clear, with light beams pouring in from above (the famous “light ray” effect). It’s a more intimate, almost magical setting, perfect for those who want something different from what they’ve already seen a thousand times on social media.
You don’t need to know how to dive: we work with guided freediving techniques and all the necessary safety measures, so all you have to do is focus on looking incredible in front of the camera.
You Don’t Need Diving Experience
This is the biggest myth about Trash the Dress in a cenote: people think you need to be an expert diver to do it, and that’s simply not true. We work with guided freediving, so you only submerge for a few seconds at a time, always accompanied by a certified guide who takes care of your safety and handles the dress underwater.
Before going in, we do a short preparation on land: mindful breathing and guided relaxation so you arrive at the water calm, without anxiety, and without rushing. It’s not a diving class — it’s simply about helping you settle your body and mind a few minutes before submerging, so the photos capture exactly that: peace, not tension. Most brides doing this for the first time end up saying it was much easier and more relaxing than they expected.
