This is one of the most impressive experiences you can have diving in Mexico. Yet most people leave with a shaky GoPro clip and blurry photos. That’s exactly the problem I solve. This is a unique ecosystem on the planet. Underground freshwater rivers. Crystal clear. Carved through the jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula over thousands of years of limestone formations. That’s why a cenote photo looks like no other dive photo you’ll ever take.
Picture it: light beams cutting through the water from a hole in the stone ceiling. Stalactites. Tree roots reaching down for meters until they touch the water. The halocline — that famous line between fresh and salt water that makes the water look like it’s bending. This only exists here. And it deserves to be photographed with the same care you’d give something irreplaceable.
Yes, You Need Dive Certification for Cenote Photos and Videos
We’re talking about tank diving in a cenote. That’s an overhead environment. A ceiling above you. So yes, dive certification is required. Inside a cenote, you can’t just swim straight up to the surface like in open water.
That said, you don’t need hundreds of dives. I adapt the route and the session to your real experience level, and I choose the cenote based on your certification. Some cenotes have open entries and natural light — perfect for an Open Water diver with just a few dives. Others are deeper, or have tighter cavern zones, better suited to Advanced divers or those with overhead experience. This keeps your session safe, and it keeps you comfortable in front of the camera. Your position is what really makes a photo or video look good.

Because I’m not just a photographer: I’m a cenote guide. I know each system from the inside, not just from behind the camera, and that changes everything about your final photos. I also dive sidemount, which lets me move freely through the cenote, in spots where photographers with standard gear simply can’t go, by regulation. That freedom of movement is what lets me capture the angles that make a cenote photo look spectacular, not generic.
I don’t pick the cenote at random. Light shifts second by second as the beam moves through the ceiling. Visibility can drop in an instant if someone kicks the wrong way. You need to know every corner of the cenote to know where to stand and when to shoot. Season, weather, time of day, and the sun’s position all decide which cenote gives you the best light that day. Part of my job, before the session, is deciding with you which cenote is right for that date. I’ve spent years diving and photographing these systems — Dos Ojos, Carwash, El Pit, Angelita, Dreamgate, Nohoch, and more — and I know exactly how to work each beam of light so your photo doesn’t look like “generic internet diving,” but your moment. Irreplaceable.
And here’s something else that makes the difference: delivery. Most photographers here make you wait weeks for your material. I deliver your edited photos and videos in a couple of days.
